By the end of the day, the New York Jets' victorious locker room was buzzing with talk about heart and resolve, which they believe fueled their fourth-quarter rally and fourth-and-2 defensive stand in overtime.
On Sunday, the Jets (4-9) showed they're still playing hard for Todd Bowles (last week notwithstanding), and that's one of the reasons owner Woody Johnson is planning to retain his coach for a third season.
But this game also underscored the lack of talent on the Jets' roster. Think about it: The Jets had to rally from 20-7 and 17-3 deficits to beat the Browns and 49ers, respectively -- the two largest road comebacks in team history. These two teams, the worst in the NFL, have a combined 1-25 record.
In fact, Bowles mentioned the Cleveland game during his halftime speech to the team, another profanity-laced message that ended with, "Pick this s--- up." Once again, the Jets responded, thanks to Bryce Petty (guts), Bilal Powell (two touchdowns, 145 rushing yards) and a defense that got tired of being bullied by the school geek.cheap nhl jerseys,
Muhammad Wilkerson said he took umbrage with the 49ers' attitude. Seems the moribund 49ers -- losers of 12 straight -- got into an uppity mood, and that rubbed the Jets the wrong way.
"To me, personally, it was their demeanor. [They] just felt like they had the game and felt like we'd quit," Wilkerson said. "We fought to the end. On that fourth down, we showed we weren't going to let them run it down our throat like they did in the first half."
On the first possession of overtime, the 49ers marched to the Jets' 37-yard line and faced a fourth-and-2. They handed the ball to Carlos Hyde, who rushed for 141 of his 193 yards in the first half. Continuing a strong second-half effort, the Jets stopped him short of a first down. Wilkerson and Deon Simon combined for what may have been a game-saving tackle.
Save for the seven-sack performance in Week 1, this was the highlight of the year for the Jets' underachieving defensive line.
"That was huge. I can't even describe the feeling," Leonard Williams said. "It was us versus them, one play, this is it. ... That was going to be our big, defining moment in stopping them."
Petty followed with a 26-yard prayer to Robby Anderson, who went up as if he was on a trampoline. Three plays later, Powell won the game with a 19-yard touchdown run that was all about sheer determination.wholesale NFL jerseys
It was an important win for Bowles, who came under fire after the pathetic loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
"I mean, you lose a game on Monday night like that, everybody takes criticism," he said. "You don't want to lose a game 41-10. For them to come back and fight, it says a lot about their character."www.cincinnatibengalsjerseyspop.com,
But it also raises questions about preparation. The Jets have been outscored in the first quarter 89-39 this season, a direct reflection of the coaching. That's an issue Bowles must address in the offseason. At the same time, let's be realistic: They're playing with a skeleton roster, especially on offense, which was without six starters on Sunday.
At times, they looked utterly hopeless, seemingly incapable of scoring against the NFL's 32nd-ranked defense. But the Jets scored 20 unanswered points to avoid what would've been a humiliating loss. They got hot in the fourth quarter, aided by some curious playcalling from 49ers coach Chip Kelly.
"I'm proud of them for fighting," Bowles said.
They showed grit, all right, but this was a bad team beating a worse team.
